West Columbia Assisted Living Welcomes Artist Resident

Agape Senior of West Columbia has many ways of welcoming our new residents. Among the many ways, we offer our new residents the opportunity to host welcome parties. These parties are a wonderful way for friends and families to get to see their loved ones’ new home.

Today, we rolled out the red carpet for one of our newest residents and talented artist, Ms. Sara Gray. Ms. Gray is an accomplished artist and has had many of her pieces displayed in several galleries throughout the state. Ms. Gray had many guests and thoroughly enjoyed showing off her beautifully decorated apartment. The walls in Ms. Gray’s apartment look much like an art gallery – with all of her still lifes and landscapes beautifully displayed. Ms. Gray was resident of Agape several years ago and we are very thankful for her return.

Columbia Senior Care Employees Walk to End Alzheimers

The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s. Agape Senior has committed to sponsor and walk in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s for the entire state of South Carolina. Saturday, October 15 was the Midlands Walk to End Alzheimer’s at Finlay Park.

This walk was particularly special with the addition of the “Promise Garden” remembrance ceremony. Each walker was given a flower that represented their journey as a caregiver, survivor, or someone who currently has the disease. Each petal can be inscribed with their loved ones name and story. At the beginning of the walk, we collected all of the flowers and made a garden, so that when they returned they could walk through the Promise Garden.  It was a wonderfully symbolic moment.

The walk was a huge success and Team Agape was one of the largest teams! Thank you to everyone that walked and participated in our fundraisers. Due to your generosity we were able to raise over $500 for the Alzheimer’s Association.

A special thank you as well to our fellow Alzheimer’s Walk Committee Members and to Ashley Hacker for making this year’s Walk a success!

Rock Hill Senior Solutions Advisor Talks about Grief

The Heart of Grief and How to Survive

After my mother died, I attended a six-week hospice grief support group, and a couple of months later attended the whole six weeks again! Despite the fact that I’d been a bereavement counselor myself and knew a lot about grief, it made a world of difference to feel the support of others going through the experience of loss.

We all need to be “accompanied” through difficult life passages, and my hope is that this article will help to support those of you who are facing the formidable task of recovering from the death of a loved one. Although we grieve many losses throughout a lifetime, such as losing a job or a home, the death of a loved one is especially difficult. It is probably the most painful of all human experiences. Whether it is a parent, child, friend or a pet, a whole host of feelings is triggered by loss, and the only way to heal from the loss is to experience fully those feelings.

Everyone’s journey through grief is unique and no two people will grieve in exactly the same way. There are, however, reactions to loss which are common to everyone. Knowledge of these responses can ease the way considerably by letting us know that our feelings and thoughts are normal and expectable. Since grief can sometimes make us feel as if we are “going crazy,” it can really help to know about the complex set of reactions which are a part of the territory. This knowledge can also help us to flow with the feelings of grief rather than try to suppress them. The only way to get through grief is to go straight into the heart of it!

Fort Mill Resident Benefits From New Agape Wellness Studio

Ruth Chamness is not worried about people knowing her age. For Ruth the number 70 is just a random one that does not have any bearing on the way she feels or the activities in which she chooses to participate. If you were to talk with Ruth or meet her on the street, you would sense instantly her enthusiasm for life; you would have the impression you were talking to someone much younger.

So what might a day in the life of Ruth Chamness look like? Well, if you were up early enough you might be able to talk with her as she walks briskly on a treadmill at the Agape Wellness Studio in Indian Land. Later you might be able to connect with her as she updates her friends on Facebook about her workout. Or you might run into her at the Rock Hill Children’s Attention Home where she volunteers or maybe in a court room where she participates in the Guardian Ad Litem program.

Ruth is an example of what senior life can be when a person refuses to let a number slow her down. I asked Ruth what kind of benefit she was receiving from her daily trips to the wellness studio. Ruth said, “The workouts help me energize the rest of my day, and if I lose a few pounds along the way it would be a bonus.” Ruth likes to work out with a friend because she feels as if it is easier to stay motivated that way.

Ruth found out about the new wellness studio through a discount program that was offered to members of her church, Belair United Methodist, in Indian Land. She loves the fact that the monthly fee is low enough that a lot of seniors on fixed incomes can still afford it. She also appreciates the fact that membership is on a month-to-month basis rather than through a contract. Feeling better and having more energy are just two of the substantial benefits for older adults that stay physically fit.

According to an article in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine:  “Maintaining physical performance and muscle strength with age is important given that lower levels in older populations are associated with increased risk of subsequent health problems, loss of independence, and shorter survival times,” commented lead investigator Rachel Cooper, PhD, Medical Research Council (MRC) Unit for Lifelong Health and Aging.

Agape Senior is committed to helping seniors live better lives through education, diet, and exercise. The company has two additional 24/7 gyms in the Columbia area along with The Good Life Café, which is a raw food restaurant that promotes good health through proper diet.

Rock Hill Agape Rehabilitation Center: Feel Better, Get Better Faster

For Gloria Roberts, chronic pain had become a way of life. Everything she attempted to do was weighed against the amount of pain it would cause her. She could not stand for any length of time, she could not walk for more than 20 feet, she could not ride in a car; in essence, her quality of life had been severely diminished by her persistent pain.

Gloria endured the pain for four years and then decided she could not stand it any longer. Gloria and her doctor agreed that she would need to undergo back surgery if she was ever going to get any better. The surgery was scheduled and completed at Piedmont Medical Center. Gloria spent four days recovering in the hospital after the surgery. At the end of her four day stay she was discharged to Agape Senior Rehabilitative and Palliative Care Center in Rock Hill.

Janice, an Agape Senior therapy staff member, was assigned to work with Gloria. From the beginning, Gloria felt comfortable because of the way Janice would always emphasize the importance of safety during their sessions. Janice would maintain close contact with Gloria at all times and watch her carefully to make sure she was using proper techniques in all of the strengthening routines.

For the next six weeks Gloria and Janice formed a strong bond based on one common goal: getting Gloria back home as soon as possible. Returning home, free from pain, and functioning fully are strong motivating forces to help a patient through what sometimes can be a difficult recovery. Gloria missed her 11-year-old dachshund, her son, two daughters, and her five grandchildren.

Gloria loved the fact that Agape Senior provided therapy on the weekends. Most rehab centers only operate Monday through Friday, causing the patient to lose two full days of therapy per week.  If discharged from the hospital on a Friday, the patient would have to wait until Monday to start therapy. Those extra two days can make a huge difference in getting the patient home sooner.

Gloria also attributes her ability to regain the strength in her leg to her favorite machine, the Nustep Low-Impact Recumbent Cross Trainer, which is just one example of the modern devices used at the rehabilitative center.

When Gloria was discharged from Agape Senior Rehabilitative and Palliative Care Center, she felt confident that she could handle the daily activities she would encounter upon returning to her home. Gloria is a perfect example of why the therapy department’s tag-line is “Feel Better, Get Better Faster.”

Garden City Assisted Living Hosts Alzheimer’s Support Group

Agape Senior Assisted Living of Garden City is hosting Alzheimer’s support groups every month. They are held on the last Thursday every month from 6-8pm. Last night we had four of our Garden City residents’ families come to the support group!! Everyone spoke about issues they are having with their loved one and this disease, different ideas they each had to making that family member feel more comfortable, and supporting each other through the different stages of Alzheimer’s.

At times we laughed about the different stories of their loved ones and at other times we all had tears in our eyes! Alzheimer’s makes for an extremely emotional journey, a lot of worries, and even more questions. If you or someone you know could benefit from our support group, please join us and we can get through it together!

Laurens SC Assisted Living Finds a Way

At Agape Senior, we make it happen. From Assisted Living to Hospice, from durable medical equipment to pharmacy, from marketers to the social workers…we don’t give up. Recently I had the fortunate experience at Agape Senior Laurens to help a family that had lost all hope for a better life.Agape Hospice of the Piedmont had brought the family to our attention through their social worker.

Bill, the 94 year old husband is on hospice and had reached a point where his wife was unable to provide any care for him. Bill was notable to transfer himself from his bed to a wheelchair any longer and Vera his92 year old wife was to frail and weak to help him. To complicate matters Vera’s daughter who had a brain hemorrhage in 2006 lives with them and cannot help with either of her deteriorating parents.

The family lives over an hour from the Agape Laurens assisted living community, so I would travel to their house and meet with the family and social worker to find out what we could do to help. The situation looked bleak because there just were not any funds available to pay for care.

Knowing that something had to be done our hospice donated 10days of respite care which allowed Bill to start receiving the immediate care he desperately needed. The ten days bought us some time to try and figure out a more permanent solution. It also gave Vera the peace of mind knowing that Bill was now getting proper care. During this process we continued to look for a permanent solution for the family.

I worked diligently on the paperwork and detail to make the transition from Bill’s home to our community as smooth as possible. Through the process of working with the family we discovered that Bill is eligible for a little known VA benefit called aid and attendance. The aid an attendance benefit was the answer to our prayers because it will allow Bill to remain at our assisted living as a permanent resident.

It is probable that most other care providers would not have given this family a second look after seeing the challenges and financial condition they were in. Fortunately there are still companies and leaders with compassion and a willingness to search for a solution because it is the right thing to do. Agape Hospice helped get the family out of immediate crisis; Agape Laurens worked out a billing arrangement to postpone payment for services until VA benefits can be established. I paid $250.00 out of my pocket of the original application fee so Bill could be admitted. Our whole team worked together and brought a critical situation under control. I believe our seniors deserve that someone is willing to take the extra step to provide the care they so desperately need.

West Columbia GMM Insurance; The Costs of End of Life Care

By TOM LAURICELLA

[sjNEXT30]

When it comes to end-of-life care, many people assume that if a nursing home isn’t in the picture, a family’s financial burdens will likely be minimal.

Such thinking, though, ignores the steep costs associated with caregiving — even if relatives are willing to pitch in.

End-of-life care isn’t a pleasant topic to address. It’s made more daunting by the unexpected turns in our physical and mental health as we age.

“These things often creep up on families,” says Kenneth Covinsky, who specializes in geriatrics at the University of California, San Francisco. “And often it’s a situation where you are simultaneously wondering, ‘How am I going to provide care?’ and having the personal trauma of seeing someone you love having trouble.”

Such challenges make it essential for families to sit down ahead of time to consider the possible burdens that will have to be shouldered. These can include anything from factoring the cost of adult diapers into a budget, to compensating a sibling who quits his or her job to care for a parent full time.

“Whatever you think health-care costs are going to be toward the end of life, you’ve probably underestimated,” says Carol Levine, director of the Families and Health Care Project at the United Hospital Fund. “There is so much that people assume is covered [by government programs] and isn’t.”

Among the biggest expenses: in-home care.

Medicare has a home-health benefit, but it’s only for part-time care. You can find details on what is and isn’t covered at www.medicare.gov/Publications/ Pubs/pdf/10969.pdf.

The United Hospital Fund has several booklets and checklists for thinking about home health care at nextstepincare.org.

“If you’ve got somebody with dementia and who wanders and can’t be left alone…that kind of 24-hour care becomes extraordinarily expensive,” says Dr. Covinsky. “At $10 per hour, for someone doing 40 hours a week, that’s $20,000 a year.”

In many cases, the cost of providing full-time skilled nursing care means a family member (or members) will step into the breach. Invariably, these caregivers will encounter some tough financial issues — immediate and long-term — which the rest of the family should try to anticipate.

One major concern: the loss of a paycheck, if caregiving duties pull that person away from his or her regular job. In situations where there are siblings who continue to work, families may wish to discuss ahead of time ways to compensate the caregiver for that shortfall. There’s also the long-term impact of falling behind on retirement savings, such as lost 401(k) contributions, and — in a tough job market — difficulties in returning to the work force.

In recent years, more studies have tried to quantify the financial impact of being a caregiver. A 2007 survey sponsored by the National Alliance for Caregiving and insurer UnitedHealthcare, found respondents spent an estimated $5,531 out of pocket each year for items such as food, travel, medical care co-payments and medications.

Common expenses that are often overlooked: adult diapers, which can easily end up costing hundreds of dollars each month, and special lotions. Then there’s the cost of adding grab bars and ramps for safety and access to homes. If you rent a hospital bed for the house, you’ll be on the hook for paying for specialized sheets.

A subsequent survey in 2009 highlighted how the ups and downs of the economy should be factored into the financial planning for caregiving. One in five caregivers moved into the same house as the person they were providing care for in order to cut costs; half said they were less comfortable taking time off from work to provide care; and one in three reported having to work more hours or get an additional job.

How to address such issues?

To start, a family member should have power of attorney to help handle an older adult’s finances, among other needs. If a husband and wife maintain separate bank and investment accounts, they should share information about those accounts, as well as any wishes for money beyond what’s spelled out in a will.

Other possible steps:

Consider hiring an elder-law attorney. While not cheap, it’s better to hire a specialist with experience in estate planning — and one who knows your state’s Medicaid program, if that’s in the cards.

Familiarize yourself with reverse mortgages, which allow older homeowners to tap their home equity while they remain in the house.

Discuss possible changes in wills. When it comes to compensating a caregiver, one option is for that person to get a bigger portion of any inheritance that could come from selling the elderly family member’s home in the future.

“If there are any kinds of issues that would potentially ruffle somebody’s feathers, it’s better to talk about them now,” Ms. Levine says. “You don’t want family members to be at each other’s throats and pocketbooks.”
